Understanding What You Read

Dear Grade Fives,

This year, we worked on a variety of reading activities with the learning intention of helping you to better understand what you read. I would like to refresh your memory about some of these activities.

tracking your reading: practicing two different reading strategies a week

daily reading: variety of times throughout the day to read

supported reading: nonfiction, often four readings: I read, you read, paired reading, individual reading

notes to paragraph: taking notes on a selection and rewriting notes as a paragraph

novel study: independent activity including finding details, supporting ideas, chapter summaries

literature circles: reading, completing tasks, and then discussing your work with peers

Please choose at least one activity and tell me why you think it helped you the most to understand what you read.

As always, I look forward to your thoughtful responses.

Love, Mrs. French

Dear Mrs. French
My favourite reading activity was the literature Circles because I got to here not just my thinking but others too. This has help me so I can have a time line when I had to get it done. I like it because of all work and effort I put into it and helped me to know what I should work on and what I do best.

Thank you for everything you helped us with this year.

Dear Mrs.French
The novel studys and literature circles helped me understand what I was reading most. The novel study helped me because you had to write the plot and about the characters so you needed to pay lots of atention to those. You also had to do time period and setting so that also helped. The literature circle me under stand what I was reading because you had to write fat and skinny questions so you had to take note of that. You also had to pridict what would happen next and you need to understand your reading to pridict so it forces you to understand. Thats my opinion on understanding your reading.

Dear Mrs. French
The novel study that I found the most help full was the novel study. Novel study helped me most because the chapter summaries helped me understand what was happening in every chapter. It was also easier to do me work independently.

Dear mrs.French how did you like the exploration center yesterday I thought it was very interesting I love the animals the tranchula I wasn't to fond of creepy!!!!

I think the beat thing that helped me with understanding my reading was the circles I like socializing and sharing my ideas with other people and expressing what the book feels like to me and what I understand and if I don't understand then I can get some answers and some help from my peers.

This is our last blog for the year and I would just like to say that these blogs really helped me with expressing how I feel in different ways and sharing my ideas without talking hahaha. It was very nice to be in your class this year you showed me how to be ontop of my game and stay organized wich I really needed help on well bye for

Dear Mrs,French
I think the most efective read activity is Novel Study because you had to write a paragaph for every chapter.Other than that it's the same as Literature Circles.

I think lierature circles were most helpful because I got to hear other peoples opinuns and talk about the book. I also enjoyed novel studys for just fun and doing the most things you can with a book. I love reading and I think I always will.

Dear Mrs French i hope you injoy lisstening to my blog..

What helps me the most. First i think reading jornals help me the most because of the chapter suymmereis. They tell me what i read if i forget so i can understand it beter. Antother reason is that the week bnook thing is to get it all done and to make sure it makes sence it helped me the most because the sumeries had to be at least five sentences and you had to do ten chapters for that to be done. I liked it the best and i want to do it next year. If i could i would want to be at the best performes standerd well at least were i am saposto be. Oh also because of the summeries are what we also read and not what was the opisit.

Dear Mrs. French,
I liked the liturature circles because it helpe dme understand the book better. The reason why it helped me understand the book better was because you could talk to other people who were reading the same book. In addition, I got to hear the other people's opinion on the book, and go into deeper depth with thinking about the book. It helped me to get to know the charecters in the book too. It was cool to learn more about the book and howw the charecter changes. Also, everybody in my group made connections to different themes in the book, and that made me understand connectiopns better as well. Literature circles helped me to understand the book better.

The novel studys helped me understand how to connect and learn how to do the opinions. I liked the novel study because when Mrs. French marked it, she put in the preformanced standers and theat helped me to put a little more effoert in or see the areas I needed to work on for the next one. In addition, when Mrs. French gave a due date, I had time to think about what goals I would set for the next novel study. The novel studies helped me understand how to connect and make oppinions.

P.S.
I think you should keep doing the litureature for the grade fives next year. I think they will enjoy it!
Have a grerat afternoon. It was also wonderful being in your class for this year.

Dear Mrs.French,
How are you today? I am great! I am sad that the school year is just about at an end. It means I can't see my friends as much and most of all, I won't see you. :( You have been such a great teacher and you helped me get better at all of my skills! That was so incredibly... helpfull!

I liked the literature circles the most. First, I chose the literature circles because when we had a group of kids that read the same book we could share our ideas to understand our reading. Second, I like that we did the rewriting the paragraph because we could think of the story writing and about what we know to rewrite it. Third, the tracking our reading (pages and date etc.) was helpful in the literature circles because if we needed more information we could just look at our paper to see what page we needed to go to. That is why I like the lirterature circles.

I also like the paragraph writing. First, I like it when we put our notes to a paragraph because if we didn't understand our notes we could just look at our paragraph and it would make more sense because there would be those missing words like to, there, up, on etc. Second, after looking at my notes I could already put them into a paragraph at the end of the year. Third, I can't think of anything else! I think that I have all of my thoughts down!

Have a great summer!

Dear Mrs.French I think that the reading activity that helped me the most is buddy reading and literature circle. Buddy reading helped me because if i didn't know a word then my buddy could help me out on the diffucult word, and literature circle helped me because you cant really fall behinde because you have to read 60 pages so like i said you really can't fall behinde you also get to do a couple not always hard but not always easy activities, but it helped keep me on track.
